The Hawaiian Islanders
The Hawaiian Islanders are Roly Spurgeon Lap steel guitar and Backing Vocals, Vic Newberry Rhythm Guitar and Lead Vocals and Andy Graham Bass Guitar.
The band performs traditional and modern Hawaiian instrumental and vocal music as well as 'standards' to which they add their own arrangements. The unique sound of the Hawaiian Islanders is frequently described as a bluejazzhawaiian fusion.
Roly's unique, vibrant and inventive playing style is illustrated to brilliant effect in the music he performs which ranges from the unashamedly romantic 'Beyond the Reef' to the rousing 'Hawaiian War Chant', from the sophisticated 'Million Moons over Hawaii' thru to the up tempo 'Don't Sing Aloha'.
Vic provides a variety of rhythmic patterns on electric guitar complementing each individual melody. Vocals are also Vic's forte from the unforgettable 'Sentimental Journey' thru to 'In the Mood' from the timeless 'Blue Moon' to the bluejazz arrangement of Richard Rogers' classic 'Lover'.
Andy's bass lines add contour and colour and give a dramatic sense of pounding waves as in 'The Beach At Waikiki' or primitive undertones in 'Tiger Shark'.
Whatever the occasion the music of The Hawaiian Islanders will both grace and enhance any event, cabaret or performance requirement etc.
