The first non Latin Americans to win the Official World Professional Salsa Championships not once but thrice Chris and Jaclyn, are truly flying the flag for salsa here in the UK. From very differing backgrounds, they first met at a dance competition in Blackpool.
Jaclyn was born in Liverpool. Like many young girls she was desperate to learn dance focusing on Latin American dance and soon she was a competing regularly in many major dance competitions. Chris was born in France and has a Portuguese father and a Spanish mother, but has lived in England for the last 10 years. Latin dance rhythm is in his blood - his father is a professional musician specialising in Latin American music.
2009 was a great year for Chris and Jaclyn. Highlights included a national tour as guest artists in Anton and Erin's Cheek to Cheek and a season at the London Coliseum with them as part of Sadlers Wells Spring Dance 2009 in April in which all styles of Latin dance, swing and of course, the salsa. In September 09 they toured for internationally renowned Raymond Gubbay Organisation as guest dancers in We'll Meet Again and guested again for RGO in Simply Gershwin at Christmas.
Having started to dance together whilst teenagers in Latin competitions, as under 21s they won overall titles in Latin dance in both the highly prestigious "Imperial 'Open to the world' Latin American Championships" and the "Universal 'Open to the world' Latin American Championships'. They are also experts in the 5 classic ballroom dances, waltz, tango, quickstep, foxtrot and Viennese waltz. 6 years ago they decided to enter a Salsa competition and becoming both British and European champions. Turning professional they won the 2003 "Official World Salsa Championships" holding on to their title in 2004 and 2005 thus really showing the Latin Americans how to do it! They have now retired from competition dancing.
In early 2004, they were invited by the British Council to travel to Cuba where they performed to local people at venues around the country and had the honour of becoming the first non Cubans since Castro took over to perform at the world famous Cabaret Tropicana.
Their unique style lead to Chris and Jaci being asked to choreograph the first ever celebrity group dance for the 2005 Strictly Come Dancing and also appearing on BBC 2's It Takes 2.
They were then seen weekly in the 2006 BBC series 'Strictly Dance Fever' auditioning candidates and putting them through their paces in the house and were the celebrity dancers accompanying Will Young.
The 2006 season of Strictly Come Dancing saw them choreograph a celebrity mambo, perform a guest spot and coach several of the couples.
They have continued to coach and choreograph the celebrities and professional dancers during 2007, 2008 and 2009, also appearing as pundits on 'Choreography Corner' on It Takes Two. Mark Ramprakash credits that the salsa coaching he received from Chris and Jaclyn gave him the breakthrough to win the 2006 series.
Here are just some of the celebrities they have choreographed and coached on Strictly - Colin Jackson, Austin Healey, Darren Gough, Emma Bunton, Penny Lancaster, Linda Bellingham, Natalie Cassidy, Ricky Groves, Jade Johnson, Mark Ramprakash.
