Don Maclean

Don Maclean presented BBC Radio 2's Good Morning Sunday since 1990 until recently.

The Birmingham-born comedian first shot to national fame as host of BBC TV's Crackerjack and The Black And White Minstrel Show. He has hosted his own TV series Mouthtrap and First Letter First and on radio he enjoyed success with topical comedy shows like Maclean Up Britain, Keep It Maclean, The Press Gang and The Clever Dick-athlon before becoming host of Good Morning Sunday.

Don portrayed great enthusiasm for showbusiness from a very early age. He left school with seven O'levels and a life-saving certificate, and soon tired of office life. Soon after he joined a South Coast holiday camp as a sports organiser and later ended up as entertainments manager.

In 1967 he secured a spot on one of BBC TV's top variety shows, Billy Cotton's Music Hall. He went on to appear in The Good Old Days and The Roy Castle Show before featuring in a BBC documentary entitled Stand-Up Comic.

He is one of the country's leading comedians and after dinner speakers, and is heavily in demand on the corporate circuit, a fact borne out by the number of re-bookings he secures. He has appeared in seven Royal Command shows, and his 25th anniversary in show business was marked by a coveted Silver Heart from the Variety Club of Great Britain.

He is now one of the most accomplished dames in Pantoland, and in 2002 completed his 30th pantomime, Dick Whittington, starring Brian Conley.

Don's writing talents have become to the fore in recent years. In addition to his success on BBC Radio 4's Morning Story, Don's fictional tales have been published in several national magazines, and he is hard at work on his debut novel.

Leisure plays a big part in Don's life. He is a keep-fit fanatic and enjoys playing squash. He is a qualified pilot and an expert on aircraft of the First World War. He pilots his own Piper Tomahawk and flies regularly to Scotland, Ireland and the south coast.

In the 2001 New Year's Honours list, Don was awarded an MBE for his services to ecumenism and inter faith dialogue.
