Al Gore
As Vice President of the United States, winner of the popular vote in the mindwhirling campaign of 2000, congressman, Vietnam veteran, journalist, environmentalist and businessman, Al Gore offers a unique perspective on leadership.
His myriad leadership skills have included, amongst much else, pulling together the diverse groups of businessmen, politicians and environmentalists to drive the highest profile yet of the issue of climate change on a global scale - indeed, he has, single-handedly, done more to push the concerns of climate change than anyone else in the international world. And, whilst some might think of him now merely as a champion of the environmental agenda, his current senior positions in Generation Investment Management, Current TV, Apple Computer and Google show that his interests and experience go well beyond politics and the environment.
"I used to be the next President of the United States of America"
Bringing Diverse Factions Together when Al Gore was a young man he had vast curiosity about the world that continually expanded his knowledge throughout his life. He was not a war hero, but accepted the obligations of service and joined the military.
He has had deep and serious involvement for decades in military strategy and global economics, an enormous body of first rate leadership in protecting the environment, advancing new technologies, and advocating an energy policy that aggressively promotes new energy sources to protect US security and consumers.
These are not merely position papers, or bogus internet petitions that are little more than fund raising tools of the consultariat class. These are areas of leadership that comprise a lifetime body of work: serious, substantive and real. These are initiatives of meat and potatoes, of impact and depth that required substantial intellectual content, developed throughout thirty years of work, involving major collaboration with experts in the field, and often collaboration with interested Republicans and independents.
Since leaving the Vice Presidency, Gore could have made a small fortune through less noble pursuits, but has continued his life pattern of major leadership well beyond his opposition to the Iraq War and strongly into the environment. Yet, he has a thorough comprehension of the self-interest of the world and is active in highlighting to the business world the very many opportunities a greater focus on the environment can offer and has been able to draw together the diverse needs and objectives of politicians, economists, businessmen and environmentalists to raise the issue of climate change on a global scale.
The Political Leader
As Vice President, Mr. Gore's positions included president of the Senate, member of the Cabinet, member of the National Security Council and leader of a wide range of administrative initiatives, including environmental policy, technology, science, communications and government cost reduction. As a key member of President Clinton's economic team, Mr. Gore was integral to the creation of America's longest period of sustained economic growth. He cast the tie-breaking vote for Senate approval of the first balanced budget in 30 years and, during his tenure, helped to create 18 million new jobs and raise wages at twice the rate of inflation.
Vice President Gore's political career began when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976 where he served eight years representing the then 4th District of Tennessee. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984 and was re-elected in 1990, becoming the first candidate in modern history - Republican or Democratic - to win all 95 of Tennessee's counties. Al Gore was inaugurated as the 45th Vice President of the United States on January 20, 1993.
In 2000, despite winning more votes than Bush, Gore lost one of the most controversial presidential elections in history. But no-one gets as far in a campaign as Gore without strong leadership skills as he draws together the diverse range of his party's interest and concerns. Learn the leadership skills Gore has learnt during a 30- year history in the political world.
"No matter how hard the loss, defeat might serve as well as victory to shake the soul and let the glory out."
The Environmental Leader
After losing the 2000 Presidential election, Al Gore did not disappear to lick his wounds and be forever remembered as the man who nearly became President of the USA.
Instead, he has once again emerged front and centre on the international stage with the response to both his best-selling book and major motion picture based on it, entitled An Inconvenient Truth which has grossed over $20 million, earned an Oscar for the best Documentary Feature and is widely credited for bringing the issue of global warming into American living rooms. Recently holding the #1 slot on the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Denver Post, and Washington Postbest-sellers lists, and receiving rave reviews from film critics.
An Inconvenient Truth ultimately brings home Vice President Gore's persuasive argument that we can no longer afford to view global warming as a political issue but rather, as the biggest moral challenge facing our global civilization. Not content with that, like all great leaders, Gore is not satisfied with his achievement. He has now launched an initiative to spread awareness and challenge citizens and governments to take action against the effects of global warming Gore has trained nearly 1,000 of his foot soldiers to give the same presentation that he delivers in the movie. His disciples, who are required to give at least 10 talks a year, are not just scientists but volunteers from all walks of life including teachers, housewives and even celebrities like Cameron Diaz.
And this is not merely a new interest of Gore's. Since his days in the House and Senate, Al Gore's environmental record is unparalleled. His pioneering efforts to protect the earth's ozone layer and to clean up toxic-waste dumps were outlined in his bestselling book Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit(1992). He led the Clinton Administration's efforts to protect the environment in a way that also strengthens the economy - such as working with the Big Three auto makers to support the development of a new generation of fuel and energy-efficient vehicles, and working to combat global warming in a way that also creates new jobs, by helping America lead the estimated $400 billion worldwide market for new technologies that clean up the environment.
The Business Leader
Whilst many might think Gore is a former politician and current environmentalist, he also has considerable business interests and a true understanding of the critical role of leadership in the commercial world.
His current business interests include being Senior Advisor to Google; one of the Board of Directors of Apple Computer and President of Current TV, a cable television network aimed at 18 - 24 year olds which is best described as a cross between MTVand CNN. He is also Chairman of Generation Investment Management, a new London-based fund management firm that manages the assets of institutional investors, such as pension funds, foundations and endowments, as well as those of "high net worth individuals," from offices in London and Washington.
