Gavin Esler

Gavin is one of the main presenters on BBC 2's Newsnight. He is also an anchor on BBC News 24 and hosts the arts and culture programme HARDtalk. For BBC Radio 4 he presents the foreign affairs series Four Corners.

Gavin began his career on the Belfast Telegraph in 1976, and in 1977 joined the BBC as a Northern Ireland reporter. Gavin was later made Washington correspondent, and then Chief North America correspondent, covering the administrations of both George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He was awarded a Royal Television Award for his report on the military build up in the Aleutian islands during the Reagan administration's ‘New Maritime Strategy'.

Gavin writes regular columns for several publications, including The Scotsman and The Independent, and has written three novels: Loyalties, Deep Blue and The Blood Brother. He has also written a book on American discontent: The United States of Anger.
