MEXTECA is a London based Mariachi, an authentic ensemble of professional Mexican musicians and singers, also bringing together artists from the Americas.

The name MEXTECA for the band came from a fusion of old and new with a play on the words "Mexico and Azteca".

Influencing media with Latin sounds

The cast and crew of the Harry Potter III film were serenaded by Mexteca when they had their "end of filming" celebration. Mexteca also made a performance for the President of Mexico, "Mr Vicente Fox" during his visit to London, along with a number of consulate and embassy functions and parties.

TV, radio and magazine publications

  • Salvador was in one of the trailers for the "So Graham Norton Show"
  • He was also in a commercial for Hewlett Packard (shown in USA)
  • TV Azteca (Mexican TV channel) interviewed Salvador for a news program in Mexico during the time of their president - Mr Vicente Fox's visit to London
  • Salvador gave an interview for Latin Sound radio and Impacto Latino
  • Salvador has appeared in Hello Magazine, Evening Standard magazine, London's Time out, KARIZMA (a Latin American publication), Noticias and Latin Express (Latin American newspapers).

Mexteca maintains the unique traditional style of the original Mariachi and its members have proudly presented the vibrant and cheerful sound to audiences throughout the United Kingdom.

The director of Mariachi MEXTECA, Salvador Jimenez Hernandez is a professional and experienced musician from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and has devoted his life to music following in the footsteps of his father and forefathers.

Jalisco is the birth place of "Mariachi" which is traditional street music and has become the national symbol of Mexico. It is a unique musical style that bridges traditional "folk" music and commercial popular music and was developed originally from string ensembles, although today many more instruments are used.

The Mariachi were musicians who travelled around working in various venues, and whose attire was a mixture of Mexican riding costumes and typical Indian dress. Mariachi music is vibrant and lively as well as romantic and although traditionally played at folk festivals and weddings, can be heard all over the streets in Mexico as well as at parties and functions.

Salvador's earliest recollection of becoming interested in music was at the age of six when he used to accompany his father to the many parties and gigs at which he performed.

He watched his father play the guitar and would later pick the guitar up himself and copy what his father had played. As he grew up he taught himself other instruments and began playing on occasions with his father and other small bands.

Upon leaving primary school, Salvador went to the Guadalajara School of Music where he obtained a Bachelor and later Masters in Music. He played at several gigs and parties in Guadalajara, until 1997 when he had the opportunity to go with his band to Hong Kong. There he played at many folkloric presentations, concerts and parties within Hong Kong, Macau and China until in 2000, when he left Hong Kong to live in the UK.

He sings the lead vocals in Mexteca but also plays many instruments including the guitar, guitarron, vihuela, and accordion.

Mexteca have appeared in a number of cultural and folkloric festivals throughout the UK. They have entertained at many Premier and BAFTA parties where they have performed in front of British and Hollywood celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Hugh Grant, Leonardo Dicaprio, John Malcovich, Benicio Del Torro and Dustin Hoffman to name but a few. Other venues include numerous private parties and charity functions such as the fund raising Gala for the Royal Academy of Arts in front of stars such as Elton John and Sting where also members of the Royal family have attended.

Having played for various organisations such as The British Mexican Society, Mexico Amigo, Anglo Latin American Foundation (ALAF), Mexico Gallery and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, numerous people have enjoyed the sound of Mexteca at private parties and functions such as birthday and Christmas parties, office parties, university parties, weddings and funerals.

I am writing to thank you for playing at Mansion House on Friday. As you can tell from the reaction, your performance was very much appreciated. Thank you also for playing while our guests were having their drinks afterwards and adding such life and colour to the Mansion House

The evening was a great success and your music was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I noticed a lot of foot tapping whilst you were going around the tables playing. Please thank the players in the band for providing us with such excellent entertainment - they were certainly events to be remembered and treasured. I have received numerous complements from the guests who were thrilled and delighted by the bands enthusiastic renditions of popular Mexican music.

The Right Honourable The Lord Mayer - Alderman John Studdard, Mansion House

Don Salvador Jimenez Hernandez has performed with his Mariachi Mexteca in all our events in the UK in the last few years whenever Mariachi music has been required. In all cases they have proved to be an authentic Mariachi band, with a truly original Mexican style, outfit and repertoire.

We have hired Mariachi Mexteca as a band, quartet and trio and in every occasion they have arrived punctually and their artistic performance has been up to what we would expect from a good quality Mariachi group within Mexico.

Therefore we believe that anyone looking for real Mexican music in the UK should not hesitate contacting Don Salvador Jimenez Hernandez and his Mariachi Mexteca. The British Mexican Society

Hi Salvador,

Many thanks for your help. I thought everyone looked fantastic. I will send a DVD as soon as possible.

Olga (for The Paul O'Grady Show, Channel 4)

Thank you so much for all your hard work and delightful enterprise at the wedding today. Your team really made a difference and, because of you, the day will always have such special memories for all of us.

Rod Ashley-Johnson (wedding in Cambridge)

Dear Salvador,

It was a great pleasure to meet you at what everyone considered to be the best ever WRVS Carol Concert. I can't thank you enough for your wonderful musical contribution to the evening which, I know, was enjoyed by everyone in the Chapel. I do hope you and your colleagues enjoyed the evening as much as the congregation. I'm told the children from the choir, quite understandably, inundated you with requests for autographs!

I also wanted to let you know the concert raised over £60,00 for our work with elderly, vulnerable people who rely on so much, particularly over the winter montha and it is due only to people such as yourself and Mariachi Mexteca, who made this possible. Ruth Markland, Chair, WRVS

We have used the Mariachi Band of Salvador Jimenez on numerous occasions and the band has been both professional and entertaining on all occasions.

On a professional basis we have not experienced any problems with the band at any of the promotions and their timekeeping has been exemplary.

Their quality of music is excellent and I am yet to see an audience that did not find them entertaining or indeed an outlet that did not see the band as an excellent addition to a promotion night.

Corona Extra has no hesitation in recommending the band and end by saying that we are pleased to recommend the band that has always been professional and treat every time they play as a good oppurtunity to create a party atmosphere and allow people to see and enjoy a small part of Mexican culture.  Jose Luis Jauregui Ugalde - Corona Extra, London

We recently employed the service of Salvador Jimenez and his band Mariachi Mexteca, for an event we organised at Tate Modern on behalf of Bloomberg.

This party was organised at extremely short notice and Salvador agreed to play during the drinks party to entertain our guests. The band were absolutely fantastic, judging the mood of the evening perfectly. They provided the perfect backdrop to an evening based around the exhibition of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and even managed to get some of our corporate guests to dance along to the music.

I would highly recommend Mariachi Mexteca to anyone wishing to have a fantastic evening's entertainment.  Rebecca King Lassman, executive Director, Act IV.
